From Aug. 2001 to Sept. 2004 I was living in Bochum, Germany. I was employed by the university of Bochum, to do my PhD. Bochum has had a town charter since 1321. But the town only had any importance outside the immediately surrounding region since the boom in the coal and steel industries of the last century. But the last coal mine closed down thirty years ago and steel making is no longer important. New companies such as Opel and Nokia have taken their place.

Shop in Kodaikanal |
One of the poor Indian families |
In my summer break 1998 (during my B.S. program), I had the chance to do voluntary social aid in India. I was working with Dr. Mascarenhas, who helps the poorest in Kodaikanal and the surounding villages without charge.
Kodaikanal is one of the most popular hill resorts in India. It is a charming hill station in the south of India near Madurai in Tamil Nadu.

During my studies for my B.S I had to do an internship. I decided to work for half a year in Dublin, Ireland.
Dublin has a wealth of historical and fascinating sights to explore and the pubs of Dublin are not simply places in which to satisfy your thirst. They are theatres for storytelling, homes away from home and so on (and do not forget - it never rains in pubs :-). After you've sampled what Dublin has to offer you have to extend your trip and visit the country side of Ireland. I did so almost every weekend.
